PROJECT UPDATE – LAST WORK DAY – Saturday 24th March
(We will be continuing work days throughout the summer, however the emphasis will be more on grass cutting and routine tidying.)
Once again a useful work day last Saturday (24th March).
The usual stalwart gang turned up and we have now finished raking out and smoothing the old sail-loft area ready for rolling / grass seed, Thanks to Roger B. and Ivan S.
Gus and yours-truly got stuck into the last bit of the bank clearance behind the clubhouse with valuable assistance From Gus’s little yellow tractor.
Dave Phillips and Hedley got stuck into the engine change on the safety boat and met some teething snags, however, all is now well. Watching the pair of them dancing with “Miss Mercury” was quite fun (see video) and the usual delay whilst waiting for water to emerge from the cooling pump outlet caused minor consternation (well, to me, anyway!) Some final bits and pieces remain to be sorted prior to test flights next weekend.
Vice-Com. Susan got Stuck into cleaning the clubhouse carpets following the police and rescue exercise at the club last week . Gillian as usual provided excellent chilli and coffee, whilst giving her boat a birthday. Looks fantastic Gill, lets hope everyone else follows your example – I’m keen on the club being green……but not the boats!!.
The last major project in the compound, will be the laying of a slabbed terrace in front of the club building and levelling the pile of spoil at the rear of the site.
I plan to get this done by the end of April after which we will be attending to the signeage etc to make the place look a bit more welcoming for visitors during the summer.
Hedley and Dave dancing with “Miss Mercury”
she’s only 25 but she proved a bit of a handful and finished up flat on her face………
WE DO NEED A REGULAR TEAM OF GRASS-CUTTERS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER; IF YOU HAVE NOT JOINED A WORK PARTY SO FAR (AND MANY OF YOU HAVN’T), PLEASE VOLUNTEER FOR THIS RELATIVELY PLEASANT EXERCISE ON A REGULAR BASIS please email me; kathykilbey@gmail.com
News from the E.A.;
The drive from the EA gate to the club will be closed for a day or so at some point in the next couple of weeks whilst it is asphalted. The fence next to the safety boat hut is being replaced and a cruiser pontoon installed in the main basin next to the steps so please keep this area clear. A top-gate is also being installed up by the swing bridge to enable the “boy-racers” to be excluded when desired. Members will have keys to this.gate, however, the default position will be “Open”.
Saturday 10th March Workday achievements
People are evidently now getting on with their own gardens as spring approaches! A smaller number of enthusiasts than usual appreared on 10th Mach and we got the remaining bits of the “tump” of Ashphalt removed from inside the gate.
Gus continued with the clearance of the area behind the clubhouse and the ladies loo was given some serious scrubbing by the Rear Commodore (a very experienced scrubber). We also cleared the drain cover sbehind the clubhouse and Gus indulged in his fetish for inspection of sewers and cess-pits……
Excellent Sarnies and coffee provided by “Gillian-the-Invisible” as usual.
Thanks to all who turned out to help We have really made some good progress since last October, you have all done a great job and I would like to continue this during the summer.
WE WILL BE NEEDING A REGULAR ROTA OF PEOPLE TO KEEP THE GRASS CUT…
We now have two good mowers, efficiently serviced by Gus. If you would like to volunteer for regular grass-cutting, please email me: kathykilbey@gmail.com
Finally, with the help of Dave Phillips and one of his big toys, we will shortly be completing the surface cleanup in the back areas of the compound (you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and we had to put the several tons of spoil somewhere).
After that, we hope that members will come and clean and sort their boats out, ready for some serious sailing!
No videos of 10th March – too busy loo cleaning…..
However, his where it was at, as of 25th February.

HISTORY – What we have all achieved so far……
We have so far had seven working weekends, plus lots of extra time by Gus, Hedley, Dave phillips and others, during which time we have achieved the following
1. All boats moved, grass cut and tidied up, boats returned to position and secured.
2. Entire compount tidied, cleared of scrap and rubbish.
3. Northern (Biddle) territory mostly cleared, derelict trailers and boats collected and parked.
4. Cruisers re-parked making full use of space available.
5. Surface water and Land-drains installed across compound to carry surface water away from the clubhouse.
6. Old sail-loft area cleared and levelled for use as cruiser storage and work area or extra parking.
7. Winch removed and parked under cover next to the safety boat shed pro-tem whilst a decision as made as to it’s future use
8. Downstairs snug cleared and tidied and now in use as “Workers Cafe” during work days. Sarnies are now eaten at the table in this room and please do NOT go up the stairs in outdoor boots / shoes. A system of fines payable to SARA will be implemented if this (new) rule is not adhered to. Or you will get a severe Thatcher-like hand-bagging from your Rear Commodore!!
9. Gus has commenced the clearance work behind the clubhouse and we need some help with that - ongoing – bring your own pick and shovel
10. On Jan 14th we got the safety boat hut cleared out and washed out; all of the kit has been recorded and pics will be published on the LYC main website , please identify any of your property stored in the shed. We need this for insurance as well as general club housekeeping. Likewise, the sail store below the Kitchen had a spring clean, all sailbags being opened, sails aired photographed and rebagged. Also all cr…p removed ready for disposal and flammabel material etc moved to the S/B hut. Please identify your sails and other kit from the pics to be placed on the website and let the Vice Commodore know – or come and label them yourself……. Gus is also sorting out the safety boat trailer (before the wheels fall off!!) (25th Feb, now complete and painted bright yellow…)
Below are the video clips, showing some of the progress made up to 28th February. We have had a really full turnout on all days, and the commodore of the weather has provided us with clear dry days enabling us to get a lot done. Excellent grub provided by Gillian and a nice warm fire by which to eat it.
Additional items that can now be ticked off ;
space cleared for covered work area on site of old sail loft;
sewer opened up and inspected byGus, the Scottish workaholic;
dry stone wall built to contain the loose stone at the bank end of the old sailloft.
We will be erecting a canvas building wide enough to take acouple of dinghies being worked on or one cruiser.
The plan is to get the club boats sorted first, then members will be able to use the covered space for agreed periods to work on their boats. Water and electricity will be available in due course – we have moved the ex-winch electricity supply cable to a site next to the new work area. We have not yet decided what form the floor surface will take – probably grass for the time being.

The first “Dirty Weekend” at Lydney yacht Club
November 26th 2011
A “Very Dirty Weekend” at Lydney Yacht Club Part 1.
Saturday 10th december 2011
A “Very Dirty Weekend” at Lydney Yacht Club Part 2.
Sunday 11th december 2011
Once again a sincere thank you to all those who came for the “Very Dirty Weekend” during which time we got the new drains installed and most of the re-surfacing done. The drain works a treat and was well tested on the Sunday as it rained quite a lot.
We also got quite a few other jobs done whilst we had the earthmoving machines (Courtesy of Dave Phillips and Gus Brazenall). Thanks especially to Dave Phillips for his phenomenal effort and skill in digging the trench, moving tons of earth and rock and then doing a beautiful job of backfilling – which only leaves the next work-party to smooth off and plant new grass seed.
Hedley and Gus were also very much in the front-line organising the levels and laying of the drains. Also, thank you Gillian for your excellent sarnies, SueLLewellyn, for handling a spade and the teapot with equal efficiency, Ivan Shooter, Dave Fruin, Annabelle, Al, Eric, for getting stuck in with the spades and shovels and getting the awkward bits backfilled.
Future Projects for 2012 (subject to committee approval of funding)
Installation of chimney liner for downstairs fire +Adaptation of table and seats for better usage of this room. In future the room will be the place to go and have your tea and sarnies when working on the compound or on your boat. Soft drinks, tea and coffee will be available on an “Honour basis” from a fridge in the corner in due course.
Completion of refurb to Ladies and gents loos and showers
Re-pointing or re-rendering of the Clubhouse End wall. + installation of new downpipes to new drain. (Survey to be carried out by RICS surveyor prior to any more major work on the clubhouse)
Refurb of upstairs kitchen.
Refurb of OOD hut – repairs and wood preservative (Done)
Moving of the “hitching rail” closer to the club-house and levelling off the “Terrace”, followed by laying slabs or gravel so we can have civilised tables, sun-umbrellas etc for summer events (now the drainage is sorted this should be simple and relatively inexpensive).
Continued maintenance of the compound to keep the place neat and tidy for the benefit of all members. In future the space in front of the clubhouse will not be used for parking cruisers as we now have plenty of space elsewhere.
Clearing out behind the Clubhouse and providing some form of level hardstanding.
Refurb of Safety boat Hut.
This list is not exhaustive and is growing as we speak (I feel exhausted just looking at it!!!)
We need lots of volunteers on a continued basis so please email me at kathykilbey@gmail.com or telephone me on 01989 763236 to tell me when you are available and what you are specifically proficient at.
We especially need a team of people to work With Martin and Gillian to get the clubhouse fettled up and kept clean
Come back soon, the Club and this page are “Works in Progress”
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are!
